Who's in it?
What's the plot?
A co-production of RealD and London’s Royal Opera House, Madam Butterfly 3D gives viewers the best seat in the house at one of the world’s most prestigious opera houses for one of the world’s best loved operas, taking audiences into the heart of this intimate production -- immersing them in a tragic story of love, passion and betrayal, all in spectacular RealD 3D.

Liping Zhang appears as the Butterfly of the title, Cio-Cio-San, a role for which she is acclaimed worldwide – and James Valenti makes an especially dashing Pinkerton, the young officer whose thoughtless toying with love is the catalyst for this tragic story. This revival of Moshe Leiser and Patrice Caurier’s elegant, oriental production offers the drama, the musical richness and the sheer enjoyment of great performance that makes The Royal Opera world class

Liping Zhang sings the title role in this drama of musical richness and great performance that makes The Royal Opera world class.

Moving opera, pointless 3D

The first time I have seen Madam Butterfly but I was not disappointed. This production was moving and passionate and listening to Liping Zhang is a joy. However, having seen several of the live broadcasts I would much rather have seen this broadcast live. There was little to be gained from the 3D effect and sitting for 2 1/2 hours with the glasses on was a little annoying. The reason it lost a star. It also meant there was no intermission, something I enjoy with the live broadcasts.
